I Really Should Know Better

This morning for breakfast I made strawberry pancakes. I thought they were a little bit boring, so I brought out the powdered sugar container and sprinkled some on everyone's pancakes. Ellie was a big fan and wanted only powdered sugar after that so I put the jar down on a chair so she couldn't see it. After that she was happy with her pancakes again. Fast forward an hour or so later. I was downstairs looking at something on the computer. Dayton and Tucker were each (supposedly) doing the chores I had given them: Dayton was in charge of the downstairs room and Tucker was up in the hall picking up all the stuff that manages to accumulate there daily. Ellie was just wandering around. So while I'm sitting there I start to hear a sound coming from the kitchen, the little clinking sound that glass makes. My first thought is that I knew all the glasses from breakfast were still on the table and I knew that Ellie couldn't reach those so I didn't need to worry. More clinking. So then I figure that Dayton was probably doing something up there even though I didn't really hear him. I went back to the computer again. Still more clinking. I tell myself that I really should find out what's going on but I just wanted to finish reading something real quick. So finally, a good five minutes after I first heard the noise, I went to investigate and this is what I found:

Yep, I had forgotten all about the sugar on the chair. Ellie, skilled scavenger that she is, climbed up the rung of the chair so she could reach the seat and got it down. She had been enjoying spoonfuls of powdered sugar while I sat downstairs knowing that I really should be getting up and checking on her. And yes, she ate several more spoonfuls while I sat and took pictures of her. I know, great parenting. So, the lesson learned is: if you hear suspicious noises and you can't see your one-yr-old, go see what's going on. Also, don't be a slacker and leave breakfast stuff out half the day.
