Those Are Some Expensive Staples

Warning, kind of gory picture below.....

Last night Duncan was playing at his friend's house. After about an hour we got a call from her mom saying that Duncan had hit his head, so Jeff went to get him. Turns out he smacked it pretty good...they were bouncing around on the couch and apparently their couch has a little cubby in the middle with a wooden lid and Duncan smacked the back of his head on it. Of course there was tons of blood as there always is with head wounds so we couldn't see it good enough to decide if he needed stitches or not. So we took him to the ER to let them decide. The nurse up front told us that he would probably just need staples, not stitches and something about that he would be glad to have gotten them later on in life if he ever shaved his head. To me, this sounded like it was only for cosmetic reasons that they would do anything to the cut, and knowing how much this visit was going to cost us I was leaning towards just going home and sticking a bandaid on it. But then I started feeling guilty and decided that perhaps this wasn't the best time to be a cheapskate.

Duncan really was doing very well with the whole thing....he got scared when we first told him that we were going to take him to the doctor because he didn't want anything to hurt, but I just talked to him until he got distracted enough to stop worrying. We waited in the waiting room for a few minutes and then we went back. A nurse washed it up a little bit better and then the doctor came in, barely glanced at his head, and -boom- stuck two staples in. No talking, no numbing, nothing. I didn't even have time to hold Duncan's hand (not that he would have wanted me to anyways) or look away. It was not the nicest thing to watch, these two huge, sharp metal points being shot into my little boy's head. Besides the cut there was a hugantic lump...it looked extremely painful. Poor Dunc just started crying...suddenly there was this new pain on top of the existing hurt. But he was really brave and calmed down pretty quick. We promised him ice cream when we got home and he still went over to my mom's house to have a sleepover like he had already planned.

Here is a shot of the back of his head - for some reason you can only see one of the staples - don't look if you don't like the sight of blood.

Oh, and one more thing...Jeff got rear-ended on the way home from work before all of this happened and the guy took off before the police got there. Great day, huh?
